4th FIDE World Chess Championships for People with Disabilities

FIDE-Vicepresident Lakhdar Mazouz declared the 1st World Chess Championship for Disabled open

 

f.l.t.r.: FIDE-Vicepresident Lakhdar Mazouz, Ministerialdirigent Dr. Frank Pfeil, Mayor of Sports Dresden Winfired LehmannAfter the Chess Olympiad 2008 in Dresden the idea of a chess tournament for disabled players according to the paralympics after  a summer or winter olympiad was born. In 2011 the 1st Chess Games for Disabled included all three kinds of disability, the blind, the deaf and the physically disabled chess players. Due to this successfull event FIDE decided to make a World Chess Championship for Disabled and gave this tournament to Dresden.

From 21st to 28th of Octobre 64 players from Africa, Asia and Europe battle for the world champion title. A very colourful opening ceremony was organized. Children bearing the national flags of the participants, music, acrobatic sports and, of course, speaches from several representials made the ceremony to a highlight. At the end FIDE Vicepresident Lakhdar Mazouz declared the World Chess Championship for Disabled opened.
